GAC AION AION V

2026-09-24 23:00:13

The GAC AION AION V is an intelligent, all-electric compact SUV developed for global markets under the GAC AION banner. Serving as a core pillar in AION’s "global car" strategy, the second-generation AION V (colloquially dubbed the "Tyrannosaurus" within the industry) pairs a bold, rugged design language with cutting-edge smart technology. Positioned as a pragmatic family EV, it stands as the brand’s primary volume seller in the RM100,000 to RM150,000 segment for 2026.

Model Overview

Drawing design inspiration from the "Tyrannosaurus", the AION V sports a tough, athletic, and muscular silhouette, engineered to provide global families with an ultra-safe, high-quality, and exceptionally space-efficient mobility solution.

Market Highlights: Next-Gen Rugged Smart SUV, Global Strategic Model, Family Pragmatism, High Value-for-Money.

Design & Dimensions: Body dimensions measure 4,605 mm in length, 1,854 mm in width, and 1,686 mm in height, riding on a 2,775 mm wheelbase. The exterior showcases an original "Ecological Functional" design philosophy, complete with distinctive dragon-bone character lines and signature dragon-claw headlamps. Inside, the cabin champions a flat-floor penthouse concept, delivering a highly versatile layout and a comprehensive suite of family-oriented creature comforts.

Core Strengths: Underpinned by the next-generation AEP dedicated EV digital platform, the AION V delivers a class-leading wheelbase-to-length ratio. Its modular packaging pushes effective usable cabin length to 3,002 mm, striking an ideal balance between compact exterior proportions and segment-busting interior space.

Development History

Origins: The first-generation AION V debuted in 2020, quickly capturing market share thanks to its futuristic styling and then-class-leading driving range. In line with its globalisation roadmap, AION rolled out the second-generation AION V on a brand-new architecture in 2024.

Key Milestones:

2024: The second-generation AION V made its official debut, introducing the prominent "AION" wordmark to herald the official launch of the brand’s global expansion strategy.

2025: The lineup expanded rapidly across global markets, undergoing continuous localisation to suit varying regional preferences and regulations.

2026 Update: Anchored by the "Tyrannosaurus" Family Edition, the 2026 AION V lowered its starting price point to RM109,800, consolidating market share through exceptional equipment-to-price value. In April 2026, global sales saw substantial year-on-year growth, earning it top honours in the compact SUV category of the prestigious J.D. Power NEV Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study.

Market Performance

Competitive Landscape: Globally, the AION V goes head-to-head with established rivals such as the BYD Yuan PLUS and Volkswagen ID.4 range. In its domestic market, its aggressively priced RM100,000-class offering has successfully captured the mindshare of mainstream family buyers.

Owner Feedback: Owners consistently laud its cavernous interior packaging (with rear legroom on par with mid-to-large SUVs) and pliant ride comfort. In particular, the generous standard equipment on the 2026 model—including the 360-degree panoramic camera system and advanced Level 2 semi-autonomous driving assist—has won widespread praise from practical-minded buyers.

Core Technologies

Electric Powertrain & Efficiency: The entire range is driven by a high-efficiency electric motor setup paired with a world-first 18-in-1 integrated heat pump system. Delivering a 50% improvement in thermal efficiency, it achieves a real-world driving range of 520 km to 650 km and delivers outstanding battery range retention even in sub-zero climates.

Intelligent Cockpit: Powered by the ADiGO SENSE AI model, the system supports quad-zone voice interaction with self-learning capabilities. The dashboard is anchored by a slick 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment display featuring seamless UI interaction and tailored lifestyle presets such as "Family & Childcare" modes.

ADAS & Autonomous Driving: Equipped with mapless global smart driving technology, its robust sensor suite and algorithms provide over 99% operational coverage across urban, suburban, and rural driving environments, supporting high-speed Highway Navigation On Autopilot (NOA) alongside automated parking assist.

Safety Architecture: Built with high-strength structural steel, the cabin features front-row far-side (centre) airbags and extended-coverage side curtain airbags with prolonged pressure retention, complemented by innovative dedicated rear child head-protection zones to create an all-round safety cell.

Future Plans

As of 2026, GAC AION’s global footprint for the AION V has entered an accelerated phase:

Global Expansion: With growing penetration across Hong Kong, Southeast Asia, and Europe, AION will further optimise left-hand drive (LHD) and right-hand drive (RHD) configurations, aiming to establish the AION V as a definitive global EV benchmark, echoing the stature of the Toyota Corolla in the internal combustion engine (ICE) era.

Continuous Tech Iteration: The brand plans to roll out regular Over-The-Air (OTA) software updates to refine its ADAS algorithms, ensuring seamless adaptability to diverse, complex traffic environments across worldwide markets.

Charging Infrastructure: GAC AION will continue building out its global EV charging network, with the ultimate aim of providing a charging experience that is just as fast and convenient as refuelling at a petrol pump.
